Sutton’s recommendation is to use clean tap water.
“Room temperature water is fine, no need for hot or cold,” says Sutton.
There is most likely a Christmas tree farm near you where customers can cut their own trees.
Tree selection is also a factor.
Some types of Christmas trees exhibit better needle retention than others.
For example,fraser fir treeshave a reputation for holding onto their needles longer.
If you prefer a long-needle tree,scotch pinesoffer good needle retention.
The quicker you get your freshly cut Christmas tree in water, the better.
Choose a good spot for your tree.
“Placement of the tree in the room is important for its longevity,” observes Sutton.
Adding sugar can actually be counter-productive by encouraging the growth of bacteria in the water.
Neither extreme is good for Christmas trees.
