Locate Leaks and Drafts

Before you winterize, find the drafts in the windows.

This helps you prioritize windows with the greatest needs and understand which sections have the most drafts.

Purchase a draft stopper for about $10 or make your own from old socks and filler material.

What Is a Window Sash?

Thewindow sashis the part of the window that moves.

It holds the glass, and it slides up and down.

Tip

For any surfaces that will be painted, do not use silicone caulk.

Instead, use painter’s caulk, sometimes called paintable caulk.

Add Insulation

Under thewindow trimmay be large cracks that need insulation.

Fill these large cracks withinsulation battingor spray foam.

Backer rod will block cracks up to 1/2-inch wide and costs about $0.50 per linear foot.

After removing the window trim, assess the size of the crack around the window.

The backer rod must be able to fit tightly in the space.

Window film is a seasonal, temporary solution.

It must be removed if you want to open or exit the window.

Most users take down the film when spring arrives.

The large sheets of film are cut to the size of the entire window, including the trim.

Double-sized tape holds down the edges.

Blow warm air over the film with a hairdryer to tighten the film.

Draw the curtains at night to cut down on drafts coming through the windows.

Thermal curtains also act as insulation to prevent heat in the room from escaping.

Thermal curtains can be put up before winter and taken down when spring arrives.

Cellular blinds can reduce heat loss through windows by as much as 40-percent.

During warm seasons, they work in reverse, blocking solar gain by as much as 80-percent.

Storm windows cost $250 to $625 per window, including installation.

The solution is to replace the sash lock or install a second sash lock near the original lock.

The new lock will hold the window sash firmly in place.

The trim, casing, window frame, and other key elements will remain.
