The problem is when you might see water trappedinsidethe drum.
This stagnant water causes moisture levels to go up.
Andthats usually when mold rolls out its welcome matand a musty smell kicks in.

Bacteria will multiply and emit a sewage-like stench, known as hydrogen sulfide gas.
Other times, theclog may be in the main sewer linee.g.

In this case, call a plumber ASAP.
So it will smell bad if not cleaned periodically.
Think about it: your washing machine is constantly bombarded with all things sweaty and dirty.
All that dirt gets flushed away with the rinsing water, right?
Left unattended, the smell will get horrendousbecause theres nothing odor-causing germs love more than a moist environment.
But thats not alldetergent residue can build up in the detergent drawer and seal in moisture when closed.
With time, this can lead to a funky smell.
However, obvious signs likepooling water and slow drainingneed to be fixed first before dealing with the pesky smell.
Also, have a towel and a bowl/bucket at hand to catch excess water that might come out.
