Fun Fact
Eaves are often associated with ancient Greek architecture.
Homes were constructed with dried clay bricks vulnerable to water and the development of wide overhangs served as protection.
Decorative brackets or corbels are often added for a stately appearance or visual interest.
A soffit is the finish material installed horizontally to cover the underside of the eave overhang beneath the rafters.
The soffit’s other function is to protect the attic and the underside of the roof.
Many soffits are also vented.
The fascia protects the ends of the rafters and prevents pests from entering.
Additionally, gutters are mounted to the fascia.
The area beneath the eaves is called the soffit.
