Texturing wallsis a fast way to hide flaws and add visual interest.

One downside of textured walls is that they are more difficult to paint than smooth walls.

Before You Begin

Choosing the rightpaint rollercover is the key to successfully paintingtextured walls.

Use a 1/2-inch-thick nap for most textures or a 3/4-inch nap roller for heavy textures like orange peel.

Fit the cover on a standard 9-inch width roller cage.

Avoid painting textured walls with a foam roller or an all-purpose roller cover.

Alternatively, you’re free to brush off the wall with a clean brush.

Remove Switch and Outlet Covers

Shut off the circuit breakercontrolling light switches and outlets on the walls.

Unscrew the covers with a flat-head screwdriver.

Store the covers and screws in individual bags.

Firmly press the tape into the adjoining textured walls to prevent the paint from seeping through the tape.

Prime With the Roller

Add a liner to the paint tray.

Pour interior primer in the paint tray.

Load up the 1/2-inch paint roller with primer.

Paint the wall in 4-foot by 4-foot sections.

Before you move to the next section, check for drips.

Roll out the drips.

Brush Edges With Primer

Brush edges of the wall that the roller wasn’t able to reach.

Similar to priming, paint the textured wall in 4-foot by 4-foot sections.

Always check a completed section for drips before moving to the next section.

Roll close to the edges but avoid touching them.

Textured walls are more difficult to paint than smooth walls, so the primer helps with paint adhesion.

Textured walls are harder to paint than smooth walls.

The indents are difficult to fill with a regular paint roller.

The solution is to use a thicker roller cover, as it’s able to push into indents.

Use a flatter paint finish like eggshell or satin when painting textured walls.

Semi-gloss or glossy paint finishes will highlight more texture than you might like.

Avoid flat or matte finishes on textured walls as they are difficult to wipe down.
