Mattresses are especially prone to long drying times because they are so dense.

Prolonged dampness can compromise both the structure and hygiene of the mattress, Murphy explains.

Moisture trapped in the padding can also create long-term problems like odor or mold, she adds.

For smart mattressesor those with built-in heating and cooling systemsthere is added risk.

Steam cleaning can damage internal sensors, wiring, or electronic components, Murphy shares.

Vacuuming removes dust, debris, and allergens from the surface, Murphy suggests.

Murphy recommends starting by vacuuming to remove dust, dead skin cells, and other debris.

Wait for it to dry to ensure there are no issues like discoloration or material damage, Murphy says.

Then, use the lowest steam setting to reduce the risk of oversaturating your mattress with moisture.

Also verify to keep the steam cleaner moving.

Avoid prolonged exposure in any one spot, which can damage the material or trap moisture, Murphy says.

Proper ventilation, fans, or a dehumidifier can speed up the drying process, Murphy advises.
