Generally speaking, wall switches should be about 4 inches above the countertop.
This allows the switch to clear a standard countertop.
Furnace Disconnect Switches
Switches used for furnace disconnects can also vary in height.
Setting this height is a judgment call, and it depends on the layout of the furnace.
Very often this switch is positioned a bit higher than the standard 40 to 52 inches.
If the switch is located under the sink, set it as high as possible to minimize stooping.

This will make it easiest to control the light when entering and exiting the room.
