What Inspired You to Develop Your Idea?
The Spruce / Illustration by Amy Sheehan / Keiko Furoshiki
Perhaps it is my longing for the distant memory of my childhood that nurtured my creativity and independence.
But I also want to share my passion for art.
Keiko Furoshiki is where my artistic expression and passion for environmental concerns come together.

Can You Walk Me Through the Design Process?
KK:The process itself is quite simple.
I like drawing in my sketchbook and enjoy the tactile sensation of holding tools in my hand.

It also feels more natural for me to blend multiple mediums.
I often start by sketching objects from nature by either using actual objects orphotographs.
Some drawings are more realistic while others gradually transform themselves into simplified or abstract shapes and colors.

Then I use my iPad and draw some images I like from my sketchbook.
It is very exciting to see how each image evolves as my ideas for the design develop.
I think my strength and what I want to convey is the simplicity and beauty of hand-drawn images.

What Makes Keiko Furoshiki Different From Other Niche Businesses?
Reaching out to people and heightening their awareness is such an integral part of what we do.
We focus on education so that we can encourage people to make connections with traditions so different from theirs.
What Are Furoshiki Wraps and How Can They Be Used in Everyday Life Including the Holiday Season?
Today, furoshiki is increasingly popular as a sustainable and versatile alternative to traditional gift wraps and bags.
Furoshiki are fabric squares that are easily folded and carried in purses, backpacks, or pockets.
Simple tying techniques can turn furoshiki of any size into bags for groceries or school supplies.
What Tips Would You Give First-Time Users?
KK:First of all, choose an appropriate furoshiki size for what you need.
If the furoshiki size is too small, you dont have enough fabric to tie and make a bow.
Secondly, the weight or thickness of the furoshiki fabric is an important consideration for different uses.
Some fabrics are rather thick and more sturdy for something heavy.
It can also be a challenge to tie if the furoshiki square is small and too stiff.
What Are You Working on Now?
KK:Currently, I am researching and gathering inspirational ideas for our second collection.
I would love to share another aspect of Japanese tradition deeply woven into their everyday life in Japan.
