If the disposal does not work or continues to make a loudhumming sound, turn it off immediately.

The sound indicates something is still jammed in the disposal.

If your garbage disposal doesn’t have a reset button, check the receptacle it may be plugged into.

The disposal may be plugged into a GFCI outlet that has a reset button.

Unplug the disposal, press the GFCI reset button, plug it in, and test it.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) does not require GFCI protection for disposals; this is optional.

Also, check the circuit breaker on the main electrical service panel.
