Makingelectrical connectionsto a machine in anelectrical boxis easy if there is only one cable entering the box.

You simply attach each circuit wire to a corresponding screw terminal on the machine.

But things get more complicated if the equipment needs to be connected to two or more circuit wires.

Attaching them all to one screw terminal isnt a safe option, and should never be attempted.

Pigtails allow you to safely connect circuit wires without overloading a screw terminal.

Warning

It is important that the pigtail wires match the wire gauge of the circuit wires.

A non-contact circuit tester is an easy and safe way to test for power before you touch any wires.

Tighten the screw terminal down to secure the wire loop.

The loop of wire should fit tightly around the screw shaft, with no copper wire exposed.
