If they don’t speak to you, part ways with them.

Do not stick to one material; rather, weave in all kinds of decorative objects.

Style shelves with a mixture of books and trinkets while being mindful to avoid clutter.

Layer together different textures for a collected look.

Allow for breathing space between stacks of books and/or items.

Showcase only items that are special to you.

Note that you could always rotate out what is on display to keep your shelves feeling fresh.
