The acetic acid in the vinegar will cut through the tarnish film.

Simply washing silver with dishwashing liquid and hot water will remove light tarnish.

Rinse and immediately dry the pieces with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

All of these will damage the surface.

Tarnish is not permanent on silver.
