Paper cups can start various seedlings but are incredibly convenient for larger seedlings that need a sturdy container.
Short Cardboard Boxes
Coykendall also recommends utilizing cardboard boxes for seed starting.
Look for short and wide boxes to batch-start many seedlings at once.
Simply fill the box with seed starting mix, add the seeds, and lightly water it.
Aluminum Cans
Do you need something a bit sturdier for starting seeds?
Aluminum cans are a great option.
Spoonmore advises preparing the cans properly before using them tostart seeds.
Clean the cans thoroughly and remove any sharp edges to avoid injury.
Then, poke a few holes in the bottom of each can for drainage.
Aluminum reflects light and retains moisture well, making it ideal for strong seedling development," Spoonmore says.
“Just ensure you monitor water levels to avoid overwatering.”
Glass Jars
Glass jarsare ideal for creating greenhouse-like environments for small seeds and seedlings.
Plus, they are easily accessible and can be found in most homes.
Plant seeds at the recommended depth and gently water the soil until moist but not soaked.
Place the jar in a warm, brightly lit location.
Toilet Paper Rolls
Who doesnt have some extra toilet paper rolls sitting around?
Instead of throwing them in the trash, use them to start seedlings.
Move the container to a warm, bright location to encourage sprouting.
Milk or Juice Cartons
Milk and juice cartons also make great seed-starting containers.
They are durable, retain moisture, and can accommodate larger seeds and seedlings, Spoonmore says.
