New year, new home: that’s our motto every year.
But this year, in 2025, we really want to live it to its fullest.
Here are seven items our pros say they are leaving behind in 2025 and what they’re buying instead.

“Items that scream ‘micro-trend’ are a no-go.
“These items date quickly and can make a space feel tired after just a season.”
Similar to overly trendy pieces, Brophy says fast furniture is also out for 2025.
“Mass-produced, low-quality furniture has no place in thoughtfully designed interiors,” she says.
“Not only do these pieces lack longevity, but they also often contribute to environmental waste.
Quality and craftsmanship are key.”
Instead, she’s looking towards multi-functional or custom furniture.
Want more design inspiration?
“Materials like faux marble or overly plastic-looking faux wood are being avoided,” she says.
“They rarely look authentic and can detract from the natural beauty of a space.
This year, its all about real, honest materials.”
“These elements not only look beautiful but also stand the test of time.”
“Same for anything shag - be it a pouf/ottoman or rug.”
“Lighting should elevate a space, not overwhelm it,” Brophy says.
These pieces enhance a rooms mood rather than overpowering it,” she adds.
Word decor on literally anything, including the walls, is a big no-no according to designers this year.
“Instead, were focusing on handcrafted textiles and decor with a story behind them.”
Instead, our pros are leaning into artisan-made or playful items.
For DeRosa, she’s focusing on playful items to elevate a space.
“Clutter is out,” she shares.
“Buying decor pieces for the sake of filling a space just isnt part of our process.
Each piece should feel meaningful and curated rather than arbitrary.”
“[Matching furniture sets] can make a space feel sterile and uninspired,” she says.
“Instead, were layering textures, finishes, and periods to create interest.”
