Sugar syrup in your hummingbird feeder is irresistible to nectar-feeding bees.
The first two are solitary species foraging as individuals.
But honeybees live in colonies and forage in groups that can cover your hummingbird feeder completely.

So, how can you protect your hummingbirds without hurting these important but renegade bees?

Sugar syrup mimics flower nectar as a food and energy source for bees.

Bees forage in full sun and are less likely to visit a shady spot.
Shade offers the extra benefit of keeping syrup cooler to last longer and discouraging mold and bacterial growth.
Moving your feeder to a new location also diverts bees to seek other food sources.

Scout bees constantly hunt for new nectar sources.
Once your feeder is discovered, honeybees will drain it unless you move it or take it down temporarily.
They swarm to your feeder and quickly drain it.
They’ll head off in search of nectar sources readily available.
Chances are you’ll be able to return your feeder to its original spot after a day or two.
If the bees come back, you might need to relocate the feeder to a new spot.
Hummingbirds will quickly find it.
